I thought "the why" was that the Democrats were trying to link Trump to Putin, so blaming Russia for the email leaks is to really blame Trump for conspiring with Russia to undermine the American election process.

Remember, this all hit a head at the start of the Democrat convention, when Wasserman Schultz was forced to step down over rigging the primary against Sanders. She tried to deflect the issue by blaming it on Russia and then Trump for saying that he praised Putin.
