I’ve coached a few youth sports teams and regardless of the score, I always encouraged my teams to play as if we were behind by one run, one basket or one TD.
It was amazing how many games we won with this philosophy...often coming from behind to win in the final quarter or inning.

You are right. I once counted the wins over a lifetime of playing sports well into adulthood and thousands of competitive games. My winning percentage was well over .700 as a percentage. This attitude translates in life as well. Maybe you can coach a few here as they may need it.
