YouGov: Paul Ryan’s favorable rating among Republicans drops 28 points — in a week

The Republican Speaker of the House is more widely disliked among the Republican base than he is among the Democratic one. Lest there’s any doubt what’s causing this, here’s what YouGov got when they asked people if Republican leaders were right or wrong to withdraw their support from Trump after the tape was released. Ryan actually hasn’t withdrawn his endorsement of Trump, but his phone call operated as a license to members of his caucus to withdraw their own if they felt it would help them politically.

By a five-to-one margin, Republican voters dislike watching the rest of the party run away from Trump even though the point of doing that is to protect Republican congressional majorities as a potential check on Clinton. What Ryan’s experiencing now in his crumbling popularity on the right is a taste of what Ted Cruz experienced at the convention after he declined to endorse Trump in his speech, except Ryan’s acting in the interests of his caucus instead of his own national ambitions. There’s another complicating factor in the reaction too: Republican voters simply aren’t that troubled by the “Access Hollywood” tape that caused Ryan to kinda sorta cut Trump loose. Just 14 percent told YouGov they were bothered “a lot” by it and only 21 percent thought Trump has actually done the things he talks about on it. (Bear in mind, this poll was conducted from October 15-18, days after the sexual assault allegations started dropping.) When asked if it was mere “locker room talk” or something more, Republicans split 62/14.

More Republicans said the tape made them more likely to vote for Trump than less likely. Mmmm, that’s some spicy partisanship! But note the independent numbers, particularly the 20 percent who said it made them much less likely to vote for Trump.

He is jealous of Mr. Trump’s popularity, insanely jealous.

Exactly. He’s so use to getting sunshine blown up his butt as the Golden Boy of the GOP that he doesn’t know how to handle a little criticism. And this child day dreams about running for POTUS? Laughable.

No problem, but thanks for coming back and saying so.

Lots of Americans are pissed about this. This latest round of stuff, which is no surprise to anyone around here, is getting lots of attention, notwithstanding the attempts of the LSM to keep it tamped down.

Brit Hume, with his reading glasses, and his ilk need to think their actions through very carefully...

(Not that I wish to see anyone harmed, mind you.)

Didn’t Ryan just win some election? What was that for?

This is what eventually happens, Paul, when your private policies are so different from your public ones.

For the same reason as Cruz advocates. They are uninformed, or ignore the facts.

That would have been the Republican party primary for the nomination as the party’s candidate in the general election, coming up three weeks from yesterday.

oh my, Cruz said something bad about Trump a few months ago.
WWAAAA, do you need a safe place
Cruz is my Senator and I like him
I’ve seen nothing but hate around here for months for people who don’t bow down and worship Trump.
I’ve seen those same folks say they’ll not vote down ticket.
Yes, I’m voting Trump but only because he is the R candidate and the Supreme Court nominee is too important to me, outside of that I’ll keep my mouth shut due to the vitriol around here.

If Ryan delivers for the donors in this year’s lame duck session, he will be well taken care of.

Paul Ryan’s WI District 1 is very safe. The problem is getting Ryan out as Speaker. For some reason, for decades the Speaker has been a Catholic. Only 2 exceptions were Denny “the perv” Hastert being a last minute replacement when the Catholic Rep. Livingston (R-LA) running unopposed for Speaker got outed as an adulterer by Larry Flynt and Jim Wright (D-TX) who got indicted early on for his book racket/scam. There are 70 Catholic House Rs to choose from, so I wish they’d take Ryan back and send in a better one.

He doesn't care about his approval ratings. He won against his primary opponent in a landslide.
