Back in 1959 I served at the Galena AFS in Alaska when there was a similar situation with Russia. Eisenhower was the CIC then. I was guarding the jet fuel storage tanks (we were flying F-102 Delta Daggers) dressed in my parka in subzero weather, cradling a 30-30 M-1 carbine, and musing: “why do these Americans trust a foreigner with their precious jet fuel in this precarious situation?” I had just been in the US for three years and was not a US citizen then. I am looking at these GIs in their dapper uniforms and modern weapons.
