There was a law in NYC or maybe NY State that if someone didn’t vote for 4 years, they were taken off the rolls. Then that was challenged by the let-everybody-stay-on-the-rolls people. Then that was challenged. Now it’s back pretty much the way it was. They send you several notices. If you ignore them all, you’re off. Gets rid of the dead people and those who are voting in another state but moved out of NY long ago.

Remember the ‘running gag’ years ago about retirees moving to Florida but still voting in their ‘home state’.

Probably a lot truer that imagined OR if it weren’t it is now.

I always tied the downward descent (in my lifetime) to when it became ‘officially decreed’ an automobile or such was deemed ‘replaceable property’ and you couldn’t forcibly stop anyone from ‘stealing it’.
