The offensive to liberate Mosul from ISIS control has begun, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in a televised statement early Monday. "Our dearest people in Nineveh province, the victory bell has rung, and the operations to liberate Mosul have begun," he said. "I am announcing today the beginning of these heroic operations to liberate you from the brutality and terrorism of ISIS. God willing, we will meet soon on the ground of Mosul where we will all celebrate the liberation and your freedom."
The fight is expected to last weeks, if not months, and if the battles to wrest Falluja and Ramadi from ISIS' grip are indicators, Mosul will be a messy melee. The assault's buildup has been ongoing for some time. US-led coalition and Iraqi forces have hammered ISIS targets with airstrikes for more than a year. The Nineveh Liberation Operations Center, which was set up to coordinate the offensive, has brought in dozens of American and British advisers. A US artillery unit has provided cover for operations south of Mosul.

Oh I fully “get” the multi-factional/ethnicity problems inherent in such an operation. Frankly, I found the Fox report of Turkish troops being involved surprising. At any rate, not criticizing your facts or delineation of the various factions involved ...just quoting what Fox reported this evening.
‘Take care,

“There have been a lot more than 2 battles for Mosul. The city is 2500 years old. “
Agree, but WE (USA) shouldn’t be paying for the same real estate twice.
I’m more inclinded to follow those on the ground and our Military over any news pundit......even fox people get it wrong when the fighting actually begins....
Turkey has a historical claim to the city from the days of its Ottoman rule and wants a say in its future governance. ...Erdogan will go after ISIS and Kurds along the border, that’s how he’s involved, as he’s been doing all along regardless of requests to quell it’s attacks..
Right now the ‘Turkey backed’ Syria army is currently engaged in Syria to take the town of Dubi, the city of the Islamic prophetic battle of the beginning of the “End of days” ...Erdogan has asperations to be the Sultan of the entire middle East and restore the Ottoman Empire. He sees Mosul as part of his territory should he become the Sultan....which isn’t going to happen..but that’s what he wants.
“Erdogan has asperations to be the Sultan of the entire middle East and restore the Ottoman Empire. He sees Mosul as part of his territory should he become the Sultan....which isnt going to happen..but thats what he wants.”
Over three months to go with President Obama in Power. A lot can happen in three months.
I’ll just ignore that post til you can come down off your high horse ....there are very few Shia’s in Mosul to start with.....it would pay you well to know the landscape and demographics of the area, as well the cultural makeup...before you flip off your mouth.
Well Obama is well known to create far more problems and chaos in the Middle East than he solves, that’s for sure......but this he’s creating now, the timing , is certainly what he wants for his legacy, or to in some way insure Hillary’s election by it.
But it is interesting that Erdogan thinks of himself the same way Obama thinks of his self....for more significant than they actually are.
See a Biblical explanation :

There is another end time event that appears to be forming now. That is the flooding and destruction of Mosul in northern Iraq. The Prophet Nahum predicted the flooding of ancient Nineveh. Today Nineveh is Mosul in northern Iraq. Nahum may also have predicted the flooding of ISIS in Mosul. The flooding of Mosul may be the one end time sign given to Israel that Jesus Christ is their true Messiah. It may be the one and only sign that Israels time of trouble is at hand.
Turkey President Erdogan is insisting that Turkey will participate in the fight to retake Mosul from ISIS. Iraqi leadership is rejecting Turkeys demands. Erdogan says that Turkey will be involved in the battle for Mosul in one way or another. We can only wonder what sinister scheme that Erdogan has in mind that will affirm his dominance in Mosul. Perhaps Turkey will bomb the fragile Mosul dam in order to wash ISIS away. Turkey President Erdogan wants to be recognized as the liberator of northern Iraq because he wants to be the undisputed Sultan of the Islamic world. Erdogan plans to form an Islamic Union including Iraq.
All of these events are ripe to happen. Dont be caught unaware. Tell others! Be prepared to meet Jesus Christ. It is High Time to Awake.
US Sec Of Defense Ash Carters Announcement:
The US Secretary of Defense Ash Carter has released a statement expressing full coalition support for the Peshmerga and Iraqi security forces.
....”Tonight Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the start of Iraqi operations to liberate Mosul from ISIL. This is a decisive moment in the campaign to deliver ISIL a lasting defeat. The United States and the rest of the international coalition stand ready to support Iraqi Security Forces, Peshmerga fighters and the people of Iraq in the difficult fight ahead. We are confident our Iraqi partners will prevail against our common enemy and free Mosul and the rest of Iraq from ISIL’s hatred and brutality.”....
Truth hurts. I did not attack you personally. Mosul will be a humanitarian disaster because we left after OUR VICTORY and the Shiite are not worth a tinkers damn. Calm down— take a nap.
The same assumptions were made of Irans former Pres. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. So here we are with yet another teaching that Erdogan is....
We can perhaps speak further on this matter on another thread in the religious section if you'd like to start one....or for another time.
We’re talking opinions here...you are free to have yours as I am mine....I won’t argue for the Shiite’s by any means but in this theater we’ll have to disagree on their actual ability to pull off anything in Mosul.....they showed their colors of torture etc in the last battle they fought with iraq, and the people are in no mood to be liberated by the Shia for that.
That said though....the question remained why did the people of Mosul welcome ISIS from the get go? It has been said because they feared the Shia more than ISIS....
The history is great among those people and with so many sects etc...the outcome of this could lean in many directions including civil war.....and I’m not even convinced a UN or US peace keeping force after this would be very successful.
I think we agree the Shiites are ruthless and we know this because even ISIS is afraid of them!
I don’t take naps :)
With respect , I can help you on why the people of Mosul LOVE isis. #1. They are Sunni. #2. If you don’t love them , they will put you in a hydrochloric acid bath until you are bubbles. I hope that has helped you along on your journey. We have been there and done that. I’m finished with Iraq.
10,000 Peshmerga forces are on three fronts to liberate several villages around Mosul...not to enter Mosul....but they are clearing the way.....via their engineering and bomb disposal unit, for the rest of the force to follow.
The Peshmerga target is not Mosul, but rather to pave the way for the Iraqi forces who are in the area to enter Mosul....
....ONLY Iraqi forces will enter Mosul with International coalition military advisors.
.... ISIS have positioned suicide vehicles in trenches in an effort to halt their offensive.
....Coalition jets have been pounding ISIS positions throughout the night, ahead of the Kurdish troop movements. The sound of gunfire could be heard across the plain as troops engage the militants.
Oh don’t be so condescending.....say what you want but you needn’t be such a smart a**.... who doesn’t know what ISIS can do?...as if any aren’t aware..... And just so you know my son was in Iraq ...complete with top security clearances.....and I come from a family who every male has served in the military throughout the generations.....further my father died serving in war time, who died from shrapnel wounds when I was just 4 yrs. old...
So know who you are talking to here!
Twice? We paid for it in 2003. Conquered it again in 2004. And again in 2008. This will be the fourth time Americans have fought to take Mosul this century.
“Im more inclinded to follow those on the ground and our Military over any news pundit...”
____________
Absolutely; and, I appreciate the info you provided from whatever contacts you have in theater. I retired from DA in 2010; so, no longer “in the loop.”
Yep, Erdogan definitely has a Suleiman complex!
Thanks......my sources come from journalists on the ground.....and Kurdish news sites reporting on their movements with various updates...and others along the way.
Kurdish forces are outstanding fighters and well seasoned in battle......I believe their reports have time and again shown to be more accurate, when all is said and done, than most ME reports. They understand the field of war and the languages so they have less stumbling with interpretations.
Also I like to see how they view Turkey’s movements....Erdogan is one bad actor in this theater ...never to be trusted and would kill his own family if was needed to attain his goals.
