James Charles, a 17-year-old makeup artist who has become an Instagram star with a large following, has been named as the first ever male CoverGirl.
Singer and CoverGirl Katy Perry helped make the announcement on her Instagram account Tuesday when she shared a picture of her with Charles. "Honored to have the pleasure to announce the very first COVERBOY, James Charles!" Perry wrote.
Charles, a student at Bethlehem Central High School in the Capital Region, launched his Instagram account last year and frequently posts selfies in adventurous and provocative makeup, the Times Union reports. His account received nationwide attention from BuzzFeed, Mashable and more after he re-shot his senior portrait.
His follower count on Instagram first received a significant bump following the Super Bowl, when Charles posted a video of himself applying makeup while wearing a Denver Broncos jersey.
At the time, his follower count grew from 50,000 to 198,000. He now has 430,000 followers as of writing.
According to a press release from the brand, all CoverGirls "are role models and boundary-breakers, fearlessly expressing themselves, standing up for what they believe, and redefining what it means to be beautiful."
