Australian opposition MPs have said they will block the prime minister's plan to hold a national vote on legalising same-sex marriage.
Malcolm Turnbull has promised to put the issue to a non-binding ballot, or plebiscite, next year.
But critics, including many supporters of same-sex marriage, say parliament should make the decision itself.
They say the plebiscite will be expensive and runs the risk of unleashing homophobic rhetoric.
Parliament will still vote on whether to hold the plebiscite, but without opposition and crossbench support it is unlikely to pass the senate.

Oh NOOOOOOO, not homophobic rhetoric!
More sane than we are. They stopped any Muslim immigration too.
Australians, choose wisely. This is a zero sum game.
Dang to bad they have gun laws. Could be a nice place to move to.
I know it might sound like it, but this really isn’t a good result. The Labor opposition (socialists) are blocking the plebiscite simply because they want this issue to be the one the next election is fought on rather than already having being resolved. They want to be the pro-same sex marriage party and so they want the issue to remain live so the 2019 election will be about that rather than about national security or economic issues which they’d lose on.
They are denying the Australian people the chance to make the decision so they can score political points. Pure and simple.
Sorry to hear that. Thanks for the info.
