Following 13 hours of deliberation, the jury in the federal case against the codefendants in accountant Anaudi Hernández's corruption scheme reached a final guilty verdict on all counts against the four codefendants.
Former Administrator of the Labor Development Administration (ADL) Sally López Martínez was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit fraud against federal programs and electronic fraud; one count of conspiracy to commit electronic fraud and deprive the state of honest services; three counts of electronic fraud through a scheme at ADL; and one count of receiving bribes. She faces a maximum prison sentence exceeding 100 years.
Meanwhile, former Vice President of the Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) Ivonne Falcón faced one count of committing fraud against federal programs and electronic fraud; one count of conspiracy to commit electronic fraud and deprive the state of honest services; three counts of electronic fraud through a scheme at AAA; one count of receiving bribes; and one count of extortion by threatening economic damage. Falcón faces a maximum 80-year prison sentence.
[Falcón's] sister Marielis was found guilty of one count of extortion by threatening economic damage and faces a maximum 20-year prison sentence. Lastly, Glenn Rivera Pizarro, former assistant to convicted House of Representatives Administrator Xavier González Calderón, was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit electronic fraud and one count of misuse of public funds and faces a maximum prison sentence of up to 30 years.
The sentencing hearing was scheduled for February 6 at 9:00 AM for López, 10:00 AM for Rivera, 1:00 PM for Ivonne Falcón, and 2:00 PM for Marielis Falcón. Prosecutor José Capó petitioned Judge Pedro Delgado Hernández to have the codefendants sent to prison immediately. However, the defense asked the judge to deny the petition.
Upon reading the verdict, Judge Delgado thanked the jury for their services and instructed them: You are free to go.
Puerto Rico ping
They failed to contribute to the Clinton Crime Foundation.
I lived there for a short time in the 1960’s and it was the same then... The only way PR will pull themselves out of this rut is to stop all the corruption. They need their own “Trump” movement...
Not guilty.
I am glad the Federal government and FBI are going to start prosecuting CORRUPTION...er...OH wait
So that the next batch of criminals can take over.
To add a little background, Anaudi Hernández (the mastermind of the corruption scheme who had pled guilty to 14 charges back in February in exchange for a reduced prison sentence) is a former fundraiser for the island’s governing Popular Democratic Party (PPD). One of his co-conspirators is a brother of the Governor’s.
If I understand correctly, this was a classical “pay-for-play” scheme. We will see how all this plays out for the PPD come November 8, when Puerto Rico holds its general elections.
