I see very few reasons for someone to serve a life term for a drug offense...
Kingpins, people who killed people while dealing drugs..etc...

Let’s say a guy or a gal is fifty. Our society needs our smartest medical statisticians to devise a chart. The essence of the chart should be that a judge could use it to say.......”ok, the law says that your fifty and with no known ailments, so you have 30 years left, this means I can sentence you to a maximum of half your life expectancy”.
So, the judge sentences to 15 years. Legislators could set it at ten% if they wanted but LIFE for pot use is crazy and I have never smoked pot.
