Had the US not been as weak and indecisive as it’s been under 0bama, Russia is not likely to have made that threat. Now they can and undoubtedly mean it.

I’d say the more proximate cause is the airstrike on the Syrian Army base where the USAF handed ISIS its biggest victory since its initial expansion was stopped.
It is beyond credulity to suggest that, 7 minutes apart, the US airstrike and ISIS ground attack were not coordinated. Further proof of the relationship was given when a State Dept. spokesman actually threatened Russia with terrorist attacks.
The Russians are dealing with the reality that the US is there for the sole purpose of destroying the Assad government, and that ISIS is the US’ proxy to that end.
