The Mets pulled themselves back from the ledge of defeat many times: With Curtis Grandersons wall-slamming catch in the sixth inning, with Syndergaards guile in a seventh-inning jam, and with Reeds escape in the eighth. But Bumgarner would not be overcome.
Bumgarner fired a complete-game shutout on 119 pitches. The Mets never got a runner to third base. As the taut game stretched on, it was clear the Mets were in trouble when Familia began to struggle. He blew three saves in the World Series last season, but his pitching was a reason the Mets had made it this far in 2016.

I gotta say, as a Nats fan, that the Giants scare me more than the Cubs (even though the Cubs are a legitimately great team). Not that it matters, given that we are unlikely to get by the Dodgers, but the Giants just know how to win. Bumgarner was something else.
I was at that game last night. Do I have to hear about it hear too?
:-(
I despise 1 game playoffs. Should be best of 3.
As a Reds fan, I can tell you to get used to post-season disappointment with Dusty. He has proven repeatedly that he cannot close the deal at crunch time. Bochy managed rings around him in the `10 play-offs and has been living in his head rent-free ever since.
Fell asleep. Watched lots of pitching duels of late. Like them. Like slug fests too. At this point I’d rather see a slug fest. I’m a Yankees fan. Glad the Mets lost. Though could care less if the Giants go further.
Rooting for the Cubs. It’s time. Usually root for the American League. If the League champion is the Red Sox, I’ll root for the National league champ.
Agree.
As a Dodger fan, I hope that their failure to win at least one game at AT&T last weekend to send the Giants home for the season doesn’t come back to haunt them.
I expect the Cubs to make it to the Series. They have the pitching and the hitting.
The one-game playoff is designed to handicap the wildcard team (burning the best pitching, etc). A three-game playoff with typical days off restores the equal footing of the WC team, not to mention adding a week to an already too-long season.
I’m picking the Giants to beat the Cubbies.
Forget about their second half of the season, that’s over now, they’re ready to make another run, and Bumgarner is right back where he was two years ago.
How can you root for anything out of Chicago after what they unleashed on us 8 years ago?
I hope it’s another 100 years before the Cubs win another world series.
At least the Cubs have won a World Series, my Rangers have never won one.
“I despise 1 game playoffs. Should be best of 3.”
In the case of the MLB wildcards, I don’t know about that. The one game play-in puts a lot more emphasis on winning the division. The two wild card teams also, more than likely, have to burn their best pitcher in the play-in game thus giving the division-winning team an advantage in the 5 game divisional series.
Bottom line, while the play-in game gives more teams a shot at the post-season, it also leaves those wild card teams at a significant disadvantage since they didn’t win their division. They deserve the coin-toss nature of the game & other repercussions.
Of course, cheapskate teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates seem to be OK with that system and don’t bring in additional talent at the start of a season to give a rather strong core of players what they need to win their division instead of vying for a coin-toss. That’s why I no longer set foot in PNC Park :-). Twenty frigging years of being terrible and the cheap pigs won’t buy the one or two players before April that they need to have the best chance at winning the division and potentially winning it all.
A Red Sox and Cubs matchup would be a throwback as both play in old stadiums. I am not for either one but it might be a nice touch for baseball.
As a Royals fan, I was interested in last night’s matchup. It involved both teams KC played in the past 2 World Series. I just have to say Madison Bumgarner is a man. From a baseball perspective we are seeing the best there is in him.
The other three NL teams are going to rue the Dodgers failing to win a game in that series.
Bumgarner has now pitched 23 innings in playoff elimination games, and he has yet to give up a run.
Now that’s clutch!
