Sounds similar to the line the nuns used on us back in the 1960s - There are Chinese children starving so you’d better clean your plates!
Of course, sometimes we had no idea what were eating, esp the weekly mystery meat! We would have been happy to send that to those poor kids.

OMG! St. Patrick's Grade School, Denver Colorado, 1966ish, I trembled in fear every day in my second-grade classroom at the thought of going to the lunch room to eat the dreck they served there. I can still smell it! And the nuns were all about that 'children are starving, aren't you ashamed of wasting all this good food' guilt trip. There were times I pretended to be sick just to get out of going to lunch. It was horrible.
