One can presume his parents are “progressives” too.
He or his parents have likely already had a private visit. If he plays ball, stays quiet, and accepts the hand slap he’ll have a nice job waiting for him at a leftist non-profit or community organizing group when he graduates from college. If a leftist has any influence over the jobs of his parents, they will get a nice promotion or salary increase. If the DA and judge hearing the case are Democrats, in a few weeks (after the election) the charges will be dropped and the case dismissed.
Should he refuse to play the game pressure will be put on the jobs of his parents and he will not be able to find a job when he leaves school.
