The United States was relegated to the sidelines of the Syrian war on Friday as an all-out assault by Syrian government and Russian forces on opposition-held Aleppo threatened to unleash a new refugee wave and drive U.S.-backed rebels into the ranks of al Qaedas Syrian branch, U.S. officials and experts said.
Moscows direct participation in the offensive left fading hope for U.S.-Russian peace efforts, raising the likelihood that U.S. President Barack Obamas successor will inherit a worsening conflict.
Entering its sixth year, the Syrian civil war already has left some 250,000 people dead, uprooted more than 11 million and provided a base for Islamic State to launch and inspire attacks in the West.
"For the next president on Day One, this becomes the problem from hell," said Frederic Hof, a former Obama adviser on Syria who is now at the Atlantic Council think tank. "Its a problem thats going to persist in one way or another throughout the first term of the next president and probably beyond."
A U.S. official suggested White House plans to keep Syrian chaos under control as Obama leaves office have been upended.
"It was hoped that they could turn over a simmering mess to the next president," said a U.S. official. "But what happened was that the simmering mess blew up and now they are going to have to figure out what to do."

This is simple.
Stop calling Putin names, sit down with the guy, and cut a deal.
That's it: blame the Russians and Syrians for our (i.e., BO's) policy failures.
Right. < / s >
We should never have been involved in Syria at all.
Bugging out of Iraq created a vacuum for ISIS to form.
Arming jihadists is always bad policy, even when Republicans like Rubio, Graham and McCain think it’s a good idea.
Fail all around.
Obama won’t talk to Putin because he knows he’s in over his head. He thought pandering and sharing military secrets with Putin would win him over, but Putin can see through Obama and knows him to be feckless and weak. It’s now a predator/prey relationship.
“Obama wont talk to Putin because he knows hes in over his head.”
It would be like me gettin in the ring with a heavyweight champ. (Or even the first fifty runners-up.)
You say: “This is simple.
Stop calling Putin names, sit down with the guy, and cut a deal.”
Exactly.
I kept getting this feeling that the only way our country - and the the world - gets saved from this onslaught of the Caliphate is PRESIDENT Trump leading the US in alliance with the ‘newly Sovereign’ UK and Putin’s Russia - as we were in WW11 - but with a better alliance outcome as Russia is no longer Communist.
I think we are still arming ‘rebels’ and we bombed a Syrian position the other day. Ooops.
I keep getting this feeling we’re going to have to go to war with Germany again.
Not really that I can see. Say we are sorry to Assad for what the last two administrations did, bomb the living crap out of ISIS and all the other rebels. Tell the Russians we are no longer gunning for Assad.
Really it’s fairly simple if you don’t accept that you must adopt the policy goals of Bush, Obama, and Saudi Arabia.
The entire Middle East disaster was created by the Bitch & the Bastard.
They own this.
The words I want to hear Monday night all include “Mrs. Clinton, it was on your watch.” That could be the “there you go again” moment.
Ok this might now be in my best interest but I would like to say something here:
Why can’t Assad, Putin and Trump sit down and find out just what the heck is going on...what happened, when, by who, what do we all want, peace for sure, and go from there...
Why let Barky do any more damage than he already has done...the Syrian people could go back home, the Russians could settle down, and America could get on with making America Great Again...
What the heck is the problem???
But Valerie Jarett and Huma are certain that we are arming the "Good Guys" DIMS are so clueless when it comes to buying BS from enemy agents and sympathizers!!! We are living in the 30's, only this time we are infiltrated and influenced by those seeking a worldwide Islamic Caliphate instead of worldwide Communism!!!
The set up for the debate is in. They are going to ask Trump about his relationship with Putin. Clinton will be on the other side of this. They are going to try to paint Trump into a corner on Syrian policy.
Trump needs to bypass the question and lay this squarely on Clinton’s doorstep.
Obama is still POTUS.
Not really, Trump can just tell the Syrian “insurgents” to surrender to their government because all American troops and support are being pulled and support will be provided to the legitimate government.
The only group we’re not arming and training is the Syrian army. So, step 1 is to stop arming and training anyone who cuts necks.
Exactly correct.
