At least 23 civilians were killed in renewed government airstrikes on the contested city of Aleppo, Syrian activists said Sunday, as the United Nations Security Council convened an emergency meeting on the spiraling violence in Syria.
At the start of that meeting the U.N.'s top envoy to Syria accused the government of unleashing "unprecedented military violence" against civilians in Aleppo.
Staffan de Mistura said Syria's declaration of a military offensive to retake rebel-held eastern Aleppo has led to one of the worst weeks of the 5 1/2-year war with dozens of airstrikes against residential areas and buildings causing scores of civilian deaths.
He said the offensive targeting civilians with sophisticated weapons including incendiary devices may amount to war crimes.
Medical workers and local officials reported airstrikes on neighborhoods throughout Aleppo's rebel-held eastern districts as an announced government offensive entered its fourth day.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported 23 civilians had been killed by 6 p.m. and said it expects the toll to rise.
Ibrahim Alhaj of the Syrian Civil Defense search and rescue outfit said hospitals and rescuers have documented the deaths of 43 people so far.
Hospitals are overwhelmed with casualties and medical workers are expecting many of the wounded to die from a lack of treatment, according to Mohammad Zein Khandaqani, a member of the Medical Council, which oversees medical affairs in the opposition areas.

Personally, I enjoy the idea that Assad is disproving the underpinning weakness of Western Foreign Policy: "There is no military solution" when the enemies of civilization rise up.
We'll soon be returning to realpolitik as we watch a military solution unfold in Syria.

After all these years of war, I’m stunned that there is anything left to be destroyed in that area of Syria. Secondly, I’d be surprised if it’s still heavily populated.
Of course, some of these people, have literally, no place else to go to, and little way to travel.
I have to strain to imagine living that way, with no reliable bus systems, no reliable law enforcement, minimized medical services if any.
I have been fortunate to be living in more wealthy areas of the world. Not so for these people. They are being defeated by the constraints of their own Islamist ideology.
WTF?
Our strategy is to count strikes as good if they hit the intended target. The best targets are berms and bridges that are easily repaired, or at least continually under construction.
That way, we can repeatedly strike the same areas and count them as positive strikes. Under this plan, we can deplete our strategic assets and not degrade the enemy at all. It’s almost a perpetual war machine—a win-win for all!
Just think about it, if we targeted new areas each strike, we would run out of targets, and then where would we be?

What has “The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights” said about ISIS (humane?) treatment of civilians?

Maybe that explains what’s been happening for all these years. I can’t see any other explanation. If so, this ‘war’ has become a very expensive, dangerous and pointless farce.
