Neanderthals have always been portrayed as slow and dim witted, not surprisingly since they are not around to defend themselves or counter the argument, but they had much larger brain cases than even modern homo sapiens. The fact is that those groups that interbred with them have made many more technological advances and developed more modern cultures and societies.
Perhaps Neanderthals were the victims of genocide by the "refugees" that came later.
They also were around a lot longer & survived under much more hostile conditions then the humans who came later.

Neanderthals, owing to their body make up, required 5000 cal per day to maintain.
This is a much higher requirement then for modern man.
With the advent of the ice age, Neanderthals could not compete effectively for the calories that they needed.
