When I grew up, Kate Smith’s version of “God Bless America” was still heard now and then. We sang songs like this in school. Without them, we do not have a common culture. But more than that, the song brought the melting pot of immigrants into the culture. When schools stop teaching children of immigrants to love this country, and why, those children will be unable to defend our way of life. As I’m witnessing in my own neck of the woods, sadly.

ALICE FAYE: NOW IT CAN BE TOLDOn the Avenue made a lot of money for Fox, so in 1938 the studio decided to film an all star movie musical of Irvings music, Alexanders Ragtime Band, recycling decades of material. Irving wrote a few new songs for the movie, and this was one of them; it earned him an Oscar nomination.

TOMMY DORSEY: NOW IT CAN BE TOLDIn this era, once a song from a movie had quickly proven itself, everybody jumped in to record it. The Swing Era produced a number of big bands, and this was one of the biggest. The song easily adapts from a torch song to a Big Band fox trot number.

ELLA FITZGERALD: NOW IT CAN BE TOLDIn 1958 Ella recorded most of the Irving Berlin canon backed by Paul Weston. She prided herself on coming up with new ways to interpret Irvings music, and this is a good example.

TONY BENNETT: NOW IT CAN BE TOLDTonys 1987 recording of the Irving Berlin canon shows just how adaptable an entry from the Great American Songbook can be. Tonys approach in this album is to work up Irvings songs in a jazz combo format for a small club.

I’ve gotten a couple of ‘zukes out of there & a heck of a lot of ‘cukes, other than that it has gone bust, because of the heat over the summer. The pond project has gone by the wayside for now. Everytime I start to get ready something else comes up. [the way of life at times] Lance is being a hand full right now & I’m still dealing with the va for him. Terry has lost 60 pounds [Yes I said 60 pounds] She started on the nutri system & I got her a peddle excersizer for under her desk. So now she peddles away while on line...
