I think they've gotten distorted by a number of cultural factors, including the way porn ultimately makes sex repellent or boring.

An economic downturn that makes it impossible to pay off debts and save toward home ownership, doesn't help.

I’ve been to Japan many times. I’ve always been treated with respect and see a low crime culture. That said, it is a weird place. I can’t tell what TV shows are for adults or children. You see very little sexual content. Even the “girl music bands”, while pretty, are nothing like those in the west (all sexual). They have cartoon characters for everything, go into a CD shop and EVERY SINGLE COVER has one.

In some Asian cultures you do hear that wives are for babies, women are for sex (even if you’re married). I’ve heard this more than once. Very strange place but I always enjoy being there.
