His military side wasn’t so spectacular either. Perfumed prince, promoted in the 70s and 80s because he was black, in Schwartkopfs way mostly in Desert Storm.

Powell’s service in the military is somewhat checkered. He stopped the troops in the Gulf War from wiping out Saddam’s Republican Guard when he had the chance in Kuwait. He stopped the war one day too soon. And this set the stage for the invasion of Iraq.
