On birtherism, Donald Trump’s campaign manager wants him to be somebody Trump doesn’t want to be
WaPo ^ | September 9, 2016 | Chris Cillizza

Kellyanne Conway, Donald Trump's campaign manager, sat for an interview with CNN Friday morning in which she became the latest prominent surrogate for the Republican presidential candidate to attempt a walk away from his long support of the disproved notion that President Obama was not born in the United States.

"So, he believes President Obama was born here," Conway said of Trump, quickly pivoting to an argument about Obama's performance in office.

That's a smart pivot by Conway! There are many more people open to an argument about the allegedly poor job Obama has done as president than to one about how Obama was actually not born in the United States.

There's just one problem with Conway's case. The candidate has never given any indication that he is convinced that Obama was born in the United States.

"I don’t talk about it because if I talk about that, your whole thing will be about that,” Trump told reporters earlier this week when asked whether he believed Obama was born in this country. “So I don’t talk about it.” That's a very similar argument to the one Trump made to CNN's Brian Stelter in July. While acknowledging he would "love to" talk about birtherism, Trump added: "If I do talk about it, then what happens, is, that takes up — then we're not talking about the horrible economy."

Despite the best efforts of Conway and Trump surrogate Rudolph W. Giuliani, who has also insisted Trump knows Obama was born in the United States, there is simply no evidence to back up that claim. In fact, there's plenty of reason to believe that Trump still holds that view but has, for political reasons, just stopped talking about it.

> > There is no evidence that Obama was born in the U.S.

The only ones that could have verified it are dead (some by mysterious circumstances) and family members who died before the election. His maternal grandmother passed just a few months before when he went to visit her.

Correction: she died less than a week before the election.

I’m a committed birther, but with Obama on the way out and with Obama and the media having convinced the American people that Obama proved his eligibility years ago, this issue isn’t a winner for Trump. If Trump wins, he can get it all sorted out.

Actually his maternal grandmother died on election day of mercury poisoning, 9 days after he visited her according to various sources.

I do think Trump would love to avoid this pointless trap. The media would love nothing less than to take the spot light off of Illary. I do not doubt it will come up in one of the debates, if not earlier. He should always be prepared to deflect it as irrelevant.

The Left is bringing this issue up now because they are terrified that Trump is gaining support among blacks.

...”Hillary is the first “birther”. It was HER that made the charge in 2008.”...

Yes, she was. But, just like everything else, when she says it, it’s OK, and old news. Logic and rationality would tell anyone with an average working brain that his citizenship has never been vetted. That is why the issue will not go away. In my view, it wouldn’t matter, anyway. The earth has shifted from the basis of American freedom which is the US Constitution to a “remains to be seen,” situation, and it is not going to be good.

Hillary is digging her own hole with that effort. This can be exposed during the debates.

If obozo is really a natural born citizen, why have they gone to so much trouble to hide the fact? False birth certificates don’t seem to be the way to go.

LOL! They’re upset because they can get Trump to bite on something they think they can turn against hi. Funny how they mock those who use the “Birther” argument then do their damnedest to get Trump to go down that path....

Ping to WaPo article on Kellyanne Conway (and other surrogates) trying to distance Trump from “birtherism”...but Trump isn’t exactly cooperating...

For the 1000th time, why can’t Hawaii release it? Where are the college records? Yada yada. Obama trashes the USA every time he takes a foreign trip, he hates Ameruca. Obama is a Muslim plant, it is SO obvious. $34 billion he gives Iran? His chief advisor is a Muslim? How incredibly dumb can people be? And they “doubt” Trump? I give up.

For the same reason your records can’t be released, they need his written permission. (Same reason a “complete set” of John Kerry military records weren’t released. They needed his written permission. He did do a partial incomplete release.) They are using the “privacy laws” to hide “inconvenient” personal information.

Obama's birth status is irrelevant to this campaign. Just another example of Hillary's media allies trying to shift the narrative away from her many problems. Trump and his advisors aren't going to fall into that trap.

The question of Obama's legitimacy will be dealt with at some point, but not until well after Trump is inaugurated, and possibly not until his second term. The key issue is not whether Obama is an illegitimate president. The key issue is that the DC establishment is thoroughly corrupt and that is what enabled an illegitimate candidate to be twice nominated and elected in the first place. Until this root problem is addressed and the rule of law firmly reestablished, it is pointless to go after Obama's place in American history.

Correct! The left has decided that Trump’s “birtherism” will be a show-stopper with blacks if they go on CNN and MSNBC all day every day to remind them of it, which is what we see now.

Chris Matthews has been starting his show every day this past week with this theme, probably in coordination with the Hillary campaign, you know the old jouroList team reactivated.

The world really did change on 9/11, so much so that the US looks and feels like a very different place than the one I grew up in.

The sign out front, the flag flying on the pole and the logo on the building are still the same...but somehow everything's different now, like we're under new ownership with new and different priorities.

Seven(!) years after 9/11, we somehow elected an ineligible, self-confessed foreign-born community organizer, whose records are sealed from US, to be the POTUS, and who has been fundamentally transforming US in every way possible ever since.

I keep wondering if there were some other optional surprises for US on 9/11, perhaps bio, chemical and/or nuclear, that weren't necessary, weren't used and were kept quiet, because we'd already agreed to their terms and the deal was finalized.

My oh my how things changed after 9/11!

From past experience of maintaining employment through several corporate takeovers, this looks and feels disturbingly familiar.

It feels like we were bought and have been in transition to the new management's control.

And, everything I see in every place I look says it's been the families in power since Reagan who have put US on the trading block.

It is what it is... whatever it is. Welcome to the new world odor, y'all.

Barack Obama let the publisher of his book say he was born in Kenya. Obama went to college as a foreign student. Why else would he seal his college records?

Because his college records would demonstrate that this supposed "genius" is an ignorant, lazy, stupid f***ing moron who only got into college because he was black.

Yes, the "great" vaunted Obama has embarrassing grades, and it would make his supporters look like fools if they were made public.
