The success of the United Artists movie musical Puttin on the Ritz in 1930 put Irving on a path to greater success or so he thought. United Artists started work on a musical titled Reaching for the Moon, featuring Irvings music and starring the elder Douglas Fairbanks, one of the four owners of the studio. Unfortunately, movie musicals had fallen out of favor, so Irving ended up with a musical in which all the songs had been deleted, leaving only a drama. The deleted songs went into Irvings desk drawer and would turn up in different shows decades later. The title song, however, developed a life of its own.
This is a dark, heartbreaking melody, quite out of the ordinary for Irving. It has a Russian and Jewish flavor, as though the pogroms were just around the corner. This 1958 recording even brings in a gypsy violin.
