I don’t think there is any one cause nor is there any one type of cancer. It can be genetic, it can be environmental. Sometimes chemo works, sometimes radiation works, sometimes immunotherapy. It depends on the person and the cause. No one type of treatment will fit all.
Mrs. henkster was lucky; the doctors hit upon a course of treatment, still considered experimental, that the insurance company bought into...and saved her life.
I still remember the one night after she and the boys had gone to bed, and I sat up thinking about the meeting we’d had with her doctors that day. They had already gone through a round of surgeries and were starting chemo, and they were discussing the possibility of the autologous stem cell transplant. In my profession I’ve had to gain skill on reading people, and as I went over our consultation in my mind, I realized...
...they don’t think she’s gonna make it.
And that’s when I really got scared. One of the worst nights of my life.
I’ve never shared this with my wife.
