There's also significantly less upside to being successful (in the traditional sense) —

1. look at how both farming and contracting (building) have been so distorted that unless you're "too big to fail" (megafarms) or hiring illegals you'd struggle to turn a profit in a lot of areas in the US
2. look at how a lot of companies are scamming the H1B visa system (especially IT and programming)
3. look at how the (civil) court-system is set up stacked against men (ie divorce)
4. look at how screwed up the progressive tax system is

IMO, there's an underlying thread of commonality here: lack of justice.
Now, tell me, what could be more devastating for motivation [for successfulness] than to internalize the notion that effort is unrelated/uncorrelated to payoff?
