Any pastors I have seen preaching a sermon always have a glass of water at hand....not unusual after speaking for any length of time to need a sip. Or for that matter, any speaker at any time..

Visiting priests/pastors/deacons/rabbis get asked if they want a glass of water, and most want a glass as you noted.
