Jiu-jitsu is a combination of karate and judo employing strikes with the hands and elbows and combining holds and take downs(’’throws’’) of judo. Judo in it’s pure employs almost entirely holds and take downs. In Japanese ‘’judo’’ translates roughly as ‘’gentleness practiced’’. Karate translates as ‘’empty hand’’.
Kurosawa's first movie was
Sanshiro Sugata, shot in 1943, about a man who wants to learn jiu-jitsu but ends up learning judo instead. I watched it a long time ago, and couldn't figure out what the argument was :-) I probably need to watch it again. I do remember that it reminded me a little of Stanley Kubrick's second movie
Killer's Kiss, not in plot of course but in seeing a movie by someone who you know is going to become a great director.
