There is no constitutional requirement for a “popular” election.

All that’s necessary is for the state legislatures to produce a set of electors for the Electoral College; that’s what decides the election.

The article I read indicated that an election that started as a two person contest that ends because of the death of one would leave the “contest” null and void.
