I could respect what Mr. Kaepernick was doing (while disagreeing with him) if I had any inkling that he was actually sincere in his beliefs. But I suspect he is a dilettante.
Reportedly his new girlfriend/fiance (not sure which) is Muslim and/or deeply involved in leftist politics. So much of his motivation is probably to impress her. Not the first or last time a dude does stupid things for a woman.
Additionally, he is likely trying to draw attention from his increasingly poor on-field performance. Any move against him would now be political, not because his last two seasons have been profoundly disappointing.
