We rode the EuroStar from Paris to London, last fall. Passing through Calais was quite disturbing...just seeing the torn fences and clothing strewn about :(

They do the next best thing, while British border control is flawed, the Channel provides them room for error a very daunting natural barrier.
France has river and mountain barriers but they surrendered control of its own frontiers to the EU. EU nations to the south and east passed on illegal immigrants to France. The British have refused to accept them, so they pile up in Calais. France should round them up, screen them by their own standards then deport or resettle them.
Instead, they blame the British, build fences and kick the can down the road.
