I have told this story before. I was in Mongolia after the demise of the USSR. Very tough times but I observed the following:

1) They were excited about their heritage which had been suppressed by the commies for 80 years. In their case it was Genghis Kahn and Buddhism.

2) They were excited about their future. It was like the frontier, the wild west. Everything was new and there was no one telling them what they couldn’t do. The future was their opportunity and responsibility.
