Witnesses say Jacksonville dog attack victim was dismembered

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has identified a man killed in a dog attack as 83-year-old Michael Downing. Downing was killed by his neighbor's dogs at about 4 p.m. Friday, officials said. The hole in the fence where witnesses said the dogs came through is now boarded up. Witnesses Mackenzie Partin and Eddie Edwards said Downing’s body may have been dragged into the dog’s yard because they saw his body on the other side of the fence.

The Franklin Arms apartment community is mourning the loss of Downing, whom they described as a helpful neighbor and happy man. “He always had a big smile on his face,” said neighbor Mark Jones.

Police roped off an area near the Dumpster where Edwards and Partin spotted the body. “By far it's probably the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” said Partin. “There was only 30 percent left of his body probably.” Partin said Downing was dismembered and barely recognizab

He was a good boy, a really great dog.

And yes, no close neighbors..he hated that. He was extremely protective.

As I said, it was the hardest thing I ever had to do. I loved him. I called him “Merly Moo.” LOL! :)

The only reason I put him down was when I had to fly to Chicago for my mother’s funeral, and I had to get both our dogs vaccinated for boarding.

Somehow, I felt like my mother was telling me that this dog was too dangerous to be around my small children. So I had our lab, Claudius, vaccinated... and then, after talking with the vet, again, I agreed to ... euthanize him. I held him and petted him as he slipped away. It was awful. But I really felt like my mother was telling me to do that.

and when I drove home, I kept having this thought: “Life is a tapestry of joy and pain.”

As much as I love dogs I would have done the exact same thing.

Children can not be replaced . I will not tolerate a mid size and larger dog that bites people or other animals with being given a command to do so.

Some dog breeds make really great pets ,
other breeds are really only good for working certain jobs and really shouldn’t be kept as family pets by most people.

Years ago, we knew someone who raised AKC registered Chows. She was not a small time backyard breeder. Her dogs were prize winning show dogs. $$$$$ They all had attitudes, as if they thought they were royalty. The top stud thought himself particularly superior to men. He would look at them with a haughty demeanor, walk over nose in air, lift his leg and pee on them. I have never liked that breed.
