Before the facility opened, I recall a televised interview with a borderline hysterical man. He was upset because he thought the scientists would create a black hole that would swallow the Earth. He was especially upset that they weren’t taking him seriously and stopping the project.

Umm, he actually wasn’t that crazy, because the experiments at CERN do include attempts to create “mini-black holes”.
His fears were probably overblown, since scientists think that such “mini-black holes” would basically evaporate almost instantly, so they shouldn’t be a threat to us. However, there was at least some truthful basis to what he was ranting about.
