"Harry Truman didn’t make a whole lot of money as president. "

Reminded me of this:

===================

The long ride home

When his eight years as President of the United States ended on January 20, 1953, private citizen Harry Truman took the train home to Independence, Missouri, mingling with other passengers along the way. He had no secret service protection. His only income was an Army pension.

Funny you should mention Truman’s Army pension.

My grandfather was a vet of The Spanish/American War, entering @18.

Later he lost his eye sight in a mine explosion in Park City, UT @ 27.

He had a family of 4 kids.

His pension was about all they had and he was grateful for it.

He was living with my folks when Truman became prez and he still would help out to keep his dignity.

I grew up hearing him call Truman “Screwman Truman” as Truman took away his pension.

He never forgave him.

Just a little family history.
