“If so, this would be a classic example of “rent-seeking,” an economic term for the act of exploiting the political process to increase one’s profits at the expense of society.”

Not necessarily. Air-drying devices aerosolize bacteria so they can fly up and get deep down in your lungs. I hate them.

Besides, one needs a paper towel to open the door, or be forced to touch that filthy handle with one’s bare hand.

That said, I oppose the regulation on the grounds that it’s none of the government’s business.

The few that actually work to dry hands are so loud that they have to be damaging to the hearing of folks that haven't blown out their ears on rock music.

The air drying industry is one which is desperately crying out for effective regulation.

I never use an air dryer to dry my hands for the exact reason you state, and you are correct about needing a paper towel to touch the door handle. If there is no paper towel available I wipe my hands on the back of my pants, dress or skirt dry. In some places the housekeeper stuffs so many paper towels in the space that you have trouble getting one out and I hate it

the energy efficient, tree-saving Dyson Airblade Hand Dryer

Which is INCREDIBLY loud, to the point of damaging your hearing. And you end up putting your hands into a very tight space that dozens of other wet, partially washed hands have used and probably touched.

Agreed on the hate them part.

Besides, one needs a paper towel to open the door, or be forced to touch that filthy handle with one’s bare hand.

Agreed again. That's one of the best ideas I've ever adopted, actually.
