In most respects, the roommate-wanted notice seemed routine. Three students at the Claremont colleges in Southern California were looking for a fourth this summer to join them in an off-campus house. They added a caveat in parentheses: POC only, they said, using a common abbreviation for people of color.
When a classmate challenged that condition, the Pitzer College student who posted the notice on Facebook pushed back. Its exclusive [because] I dont want to live with any white folks, wrote Karé Ureña, who is black.
The online comments touched off a debate this week over race at Pitzer and neighboring colleges, one that flared into national headlines after the Claremont Independent student magazine wrote about it.
To some, Ureñas request was completely understandable following a racially charged year when many students of color had demanded more support from the administration. To others, it was simple racism to exclude potential roommates based on skin color.

I wanted to put ‘No Mexicans or Russians or Moooslims’ in a car ad on craigslist and my wife made me take it off. (should not have showed her.)
Yes but what about bi-racial people? How does that work? Talk about a love-hate relationsip.
I was going to say the same thing...”I can’t think of anything nice to say” but I’m glad you said what I was thinking. I have to leave the room for a minute...my fingers are trying to control me and make me say the things I was gonna say.....’cuse me..........;)
Most of the 2K comments after this article agree with you.
They should have the same rights as I do.
If I were in need of a roommate, I would write in the same stipulation so people don't waste my time
Say no more.....some will not like what I am about to write.
Now he knows how many of us feel. Yes, indeed it is “RACISS!” He or she gets extra credit for being honest about his feelings.
Racism is not an abnormal feeling. It is how you act on that feeling.
How about “no loud music with talking in obscene rhymes?”
That's why "minority studies" is creeping into the mainstream freshman-level elective classes. Example: the University of Alabama has a freshman composition class which, when you read the syllabus, turns out to be a "history of rap and hip-hop music" class. Not surprisingly, the "professor" recently moved to Tuscaloosa from the Birmingham campus, where she taught *only* minority studies classes.
All she did was take one of those classes and repackage it to disguise it as a Comp 101 class. The son of a friend of mine is at Bama and sent his dad a link to that class info, just to see his reaction.
Those classes are for the football and basketball players.
Is that topiary?
If you can run a housing that saying POC only..you can run one saying No POC
If you can run a housing that saying POC only..you can run one saying No POC
What’s the problem?
People want to be with their own kind.
Damn blue-eyed devil Crackas. Ain’t nobody wanna share with those rasis white boys.
Whether they run up debt or just have us pay for it, they are just wasting time and “playing college” - just as unemployable when they graduate as when they entered...
“This is but another example to us that social media is not an effective platform to engage in complex dialog on seemingly intractable critical issues that have varied histories and contested understandings.”
This is blackspeak for if you are going to be racist don’t write it down where people can read it.
What white person would want to live with a black racist fool?
..and if a white had been seeking a non black roomate?
