U.S. womens gymnast Gabby Douglas was criticized for not placing her hand over her heart during the playing of The Star-Spangled Banner Tuesday night, and she has since apologized to anyone she may have offended.
Douglas was ripped apart on social media for standing with her hands by her side as the U.S. national anthem played after she and her teammates received their gold medals. She wrote on Twitter that she never meant any disrespect

And Obama plays with his donkey kong. How nice chief idiot.
“Interesting. No one has called out Michael Phelps for laughing during the anthem”
My husband was SO OFFENDED by this last night! He practically made our 9 year old look away because it was such a poor example.
I have to agree with that. That’s what I recall .
We did the same.
I take nothing away from Michael Phelps. He has accomplished amazing feats of swim expertise and athleticism. But have you ever heard him speak about anything outside of pool issues?
I have and just realized articulation wasn’t his forte at that time. Not a problem. Mike is a millionaire many times over. I’m sure he could give a flip what I think about anything, as Mike is the man with the gold. His record will live on for a long time, as did Mark Spitz.
It’seems not gold. Silvee
I saw him laugh. I saw it as an outward expression of great joy welling up from down in his soul, given extra thrills from glancing over at his wife and son Boomer, an his Mother in the stands.
Had the young lady had her right hand flat across her chest instead of clenched in a fist at her side, I would be inclined to give her a pass as well, if she’d also shown a bit of joy or exhultation during the playing of our Nationa Anthem. After all, they are live, breathing human souls, and not unfeeling automatons.
I say give 'em a break. They're athletes who are under more pressure than I've ever experienced and living under a media microscope.
Carl Sagan
Astronomer, astrophysicist, cosmologist, pothead.
Its hard to argue for pot slowing you down when you look at Carl Sagans record. Apparently a confirmed and admitted stoner, among his many achievements are a Pulitzer Prize, an Emmy, a best-selling novel, as well as more than 500 science papers and articles. He was a founding member of the Planetary Society, and he won a pipe load of scientific awards. Hardly surprising, he is said to have believed in the validity of stoned insights. I believe in them too, its just that Carls revolved around the origins of the cosmos, not which bagel store is open at 3 in the morning.
Her body language is not defiant in that photo, imho.
Phelps is a fast swimmer AND he’s a millionaire
Douglas is a great athlete AND her mother was a single mother
It’s ok that they disrespect the national anthem on worldwide TV while accepting their medals on behalf of the US
Are you people listening to yourselves?
My nomination for best quote of the day.
Carl Sagan? THEE Carl Sagan from on the TV shows was a heavy doper?
I’m not too sure about that.
There is much misinformation on the internet.
Not if he can’t honor true anthem and sho some example. Sorry
I’m amazed at the things im reading here.
“I say give ‘em a break. They’re athletes who are under more pressure than I’ve ever experienced and living under a media microscope.”
Go talk to a combat veteran marine
I wonder if Carl was high when he decided to pimp global warming catastrophes?
I stole that line from the late talk show host George Putnam. Do yes, I plagiarized!
One has to believe that our athletes, as national representatives, received no instruction in proper protocol for honoring their flag during ceremonies
She meant no disrespect- to her own beliefs
As to the flag and what it represents to the other 300+ million of us, I think differently
Actually it's easy to believe if they had a State Dept. representative informing them of the correct procedures - given this current State Dept. management/leaders.
I see it as imperfect, not disrespectful.
Michelle Obama thinks you lifted that line from one of her speeches. “How else could he have come up with such an original thought? He stole it from me, a Black Woman!”
