I think she just picked a bad phrase to describe not making a “connect the dots” argument. She said similar, though she and wallace were talking past each other. It’s just a BS excuse. The dot she added is the obvious lie, that what she tole Comey and what she told the public are consistent.

What can I say, she's not very bright, and she thought that might go over in that audience. No matter what she meant, it's taken on a life of its own, in a way that cuts against her.

That is the first thing I thought when I heard it. It is exactly the way to try to explain to a lay person what is happening inside the brain’s pathways. More polite than a “brain fart”.
