United Way of Otero County ordered to stop gun raffle

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (KRQE) – There are some upset people in one New Mexico city after a fundraiser for the United Way was shut down because the well-known charity wanted to raffle off guns. “As Americans of freedom and liberty we have to remember we only have the rights that we stand up for,” said Kerry Maupin, local business owner. The United Way of Otero County received a letter from United Way World telling them to cease and desist with their fundraiser that would raffle off 108 firearms.

Some years ago I diverted almost all of my donations to United Way ($400 per year matched by my employer) to a Boy Scout Council in Idaho after United Way dropped the Scouts.

For several years I received nice thank you notes from a group who had no idea why somebody in California would be supporting them.

Years ago I got into a bit of trouble at work. They had a corporate policy supporting the United Way, and they would do corporate matches to the UW. They wanted a 100% participation rate in giving to UW, but when UW began pressuring the Boy Scouts of America about their policy against homosexuality, I decided to stop giving. I told my employers that I could no longer support the UW.

I caught quite a bit of hell over that for the next few weeks.

I’ve pretty much stopped giving to humans. Most of my donated time and money goes to the local animal shelter. We are working on a new building and as a fund raiser are naming rooms after contributers. I am sponsoring one as a memorial to my son.

United Way is a way to send donations to “progressive” causes, that would not otherwise get them.

I stopped giving to United Way decades ago.
