The popularity depends on whether its described as a ban of "all Muslims from entering the U.S." a bridge too far for many or whether the plan is narrowed to "temporarily banning" non-citizens who are Muslim.
If nothing else, Trump's unusual campaign appears to have normalized the once-maligned notion of the government applying a religious test. Millions of Americans are now intrigued by the idea, which has largely been debated without any detailed effort to reckon with its implementation or cost.
According to the officials who handle U.S. immigration and security, however, the most practical problem with Trump's plan is not about social controversy or discrimination.
It's about governing and whether a plan that may cripple the immigration system could actually be implemented.
It is a major question in this year's politics, a field long known as the "art of the possible."

Yep. They did it from 1920 to 1965.
Attacked from every angle
Isn’t that the point?
Maybe the media is right for once. In that case, we should take a more general approach.
1. End chain migration by limiting family based visas to spouses and minor children only. Family from certain nations would face tougher scrutiny and have higher hurdles to clear.
2. Abolish the Diversity Lottery Visas.
3. Greatly reduce Asylum/Refugee visas, and disallow them completely from certain nations.
4. Reduce H1B and similar types of visas, and disallow them from certain nations.
Do these things and we’d see an immediate and significant reduction in Muslim immigration, as well as overall immigration. Over time the reduction would grow so long as other channels of legal immigration weren’t created and/or expanded.
context means something when reading a constitutional statement, but hey what’s a little conflation among friends
How could not taking in refugees from Syria possibly cripple our immigration system?
YAY!...
THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT I WOULD WISH!!!!
“CRIPPLE” the entire immigration system!
Cripple? How does one ‘cripple’ an optional program??
Cripple the dysfunctional immigration system? Promise?
How?
What system is that???
Experts built the Titanic.
Or is NBC News branching out into satire? Parodying itself.
Here’s the deal; and it will work: in the screening process for people from the Middle East ask them if they support Israel. It’s a legitimate question because supporting Israel is the official policy of the United States. Anyone who comes here should be able to support the official policy.
Go, Trump!
No. Only traitors say that.
“Experts” meaning DNC officials?
Please reconsider. As Bill and Hillary make $millions on the $billions it costs to flood the US with peaceful Muslims, think of the trickle down effects of NOT spending $billions on peaceful Muslms.
For example, Walmart will NOT get the business it will get with the Muslim crowd. Ever notice all of those covered heads spending government welfare? Think of how many people will loose their jobs without the increased income from new Muslims?
And let's not leave out the higher number of police that will be needed to address increased friction from peaceful Muslims and Christians who harass them.
No matter how you look at, America needs more Muslims to continue the strong economic recovery Hussein Obama talks about! /sarc
Go ahead. Cripple it. Freeze it so it can’t admit anyone. No big loss.
