Everything has a cost. I’d like cheap gas, too, but the fact is that it is more expensive to obtain it domestically through hydraulic fracturing than it is to import it, especially when the Saudis open up the spigots. Actually, we get more oil from Canada than we do from Saudi Arabia. But the petrodollars are fungible. The Chinese get their oil from Saudi Arabia, and pay for it with the dollars we send them in our annual trade deficit. So in an indirect way, as long as that construct exists, we will fund the Saudis through the Chinese.
We have to find a way out of that bind. We are supporting Wahabbism in different ways, leading in part to the current situation.
