2008 both Obama and McCain got about 39 million
2012: Obama got 33.5, Romney got 30

You have to take internet into consideration, fewer people watching television now. More people go online watching afterwards

These numbers are just for TV viewers, I believe. They don’t include the millions of people who watched the conventions by internet streaming video. It may be that Trump was watched by more people in history to match his yuge primary voting numbers.
