A federal judge in Wisconsin has declared multiple Republican-authored election laws unconstitutional in a sweeping ruling.
Two liberal groups filed a lawsuit in May challenging the laws, including a requirement that voters show photo identification.
U.S. District Judge James Peterson issued a ruling Friday that upheld the voter ID law, but struck down a number of GOP-written statutes and policies that restricted voting.

When I moved to Indiana and got my driver’s license, I had to provide several forms of identification: my Illinois license, and a utility bill to prove residence. I don’t remember if it was required, but I also brought a copy of my birth certificate and my passport. The drivers license guy then asked if I wanted to register to vote. I did and he registered me. The Indiana DL is a “smart ID.” When I go to vote, they swipe my driver’s license. It brings up my name and information, a place to sign electronically, and my ballot. I don’t know what they do with people who don’t drive.
Is this unconstitutional? I don’t have a problem with it and am not aware that that arrangement has ever been challenged. If it is not constitutional, why not?
What must someone do to risk a felony so that he/she can vote twice? I don't think that you will find anyone who wants to bother.
Shortsighted so-called “conservatives” seem to always forget this point when they take their ball and go home crying when their candidate doesn’t get nominated. The Liberal who then gets elected because our side didn’t turn out appoints judges who screw us over for a lifetime, churning out ruling after ruling like this one.
The commie judge has an address. Send the Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke to arrest him for racism.

The number of prosecutions is vanishingly small and marked with slaps on the wrist. It seems the “duh, I didn’t know” excuse flies long and far today.
On November 7, 2013, Peterson was nominated by President Barack Obama to be a judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin.
Judge shopping.
The Democrats are "using legal process to punish conservatives".
Unfortunately, this will take years to work its way through appeals.
You have to show photo ID to enter a Federal Courthouse, but not to enter a polling center?
I say they should make it illegal to require anyone to show ID to enter a Federal Building or to get on a plane or go through any security checkpoint.
Well, I can't even imagine anyone wanting to go to all that trouble to create an extra vote. Have you ever done it? Have you ever known anyone to sneak in an extra vote? It's hard to imagine. ;-)
Why not just have Obama write an executive order and declare her his successor and skip all this middle man judge stuff and the expense of an election? (rolling my eyes)
You haven’t heard of busloads of “ignorami” have you? As an individually engendered misdeed the motive might be vanishingly small... but not when one has been set on some kind of jihad to “get back for racial inequality” or some such canard.
You haven’t heard of busloads of “ignorami” have you?
(You ought to have. It comes up on FR every now and then.)
Well, I’ve known a lot of people who have committed a lot of offenses. I’ve never known anyone who told me that they went out of their way to illegally vote. And, that may explain why we don’t hear about many prosecutions. It’s just not a crime that makes a lot of sense for the perpetrator. And, maybe that’s why I have never known anyone who claims to know anyone who committed that offense.
I hope the court of appeals in both of these circuits (North Carolina and Wisconsin) will overturn these decisions. Then, if the Supreme Court is a tie, the Appeal Courts’ rulings will stand.
It’s better that it started out this way at the lower court (if it had to happen at all). So, hopefully it will end up
1. struck down
2. overturned
3. tie—stays at overturned
I told you the main energizing mode. Why are you evading this?
I agree....
The timing of SCJ Anton Scalia’s death is coming into real clear focus, right about now.
Anyway, my suggestion is that we just take a thumbprint of every voter (right next to their signature) and then if you find some screwball who has invested the time to vote twice, you will have proof in the form of two identical thumbprints. And, then you can avoid all these crazy lawsuits about which identification papers should be acceptable.
Sometimes common sense leads us to the best answers.
Because of other privacy concerns regarding fingerprints. I wouldn’t want Hillary to have a thumbprint of mine, should she come into power.
