Severe Hailstorm in Colorado Springs
KOAA News Station, Colorado Springs ^ | 28 Jul 2016 | helensdottr

This evening there was a torrential downpour in Colorado Springs, CO, with hailstones ranging from 1" to 3+" in size. The damage occurred mostly on the northeast to southeast side of town and is now moving off onto the plains. Windshields and house windows smashed, roads flooded with rain and hailstones, police were asking everyone to stay indoors. I live on the southwest side of town and was aware of the violence of the storms, but didn't get much here.

Colorado Springs gets more hail every year than almost any other city in the U.S., but the size of the hail today was extreme even for us.

Thanks, JennysCool. It’s all over with now, at least for Colorado Springs; the storm has moved out over the plains and towns out there are bracing.

We got caught in one two weeks ago in Pueblo on I25. Just got the estimate of $1900 damage to our RAV4.

The RAV was in tow at the time so we weren’t in it, but the hail was pretty loud on the RV’s roof.

I’m out by Fort Carson - thought that we might lose some windows in the house - luckily all is well.

Something should be done about them.

I just pulled into town late tonight coming up I-25.

There was vivid lightning visible on the east side of the road as I drove up from New Mexico.

I agree. Let’s ban mountains. Every state will have 6 months to comply.

Years ago, my brother owned two body shops in Denver. One was located on the main East-West street of Colfax, and the other one was up north of Denver, in Thornton. They would get a couple of hail storms a year, which would keep the body shops booked for months. I’ve been an automotive restoration specialist for over thirty five years and know the business intimately. The resulting damage to the cars looked like someone viciously took a ball peen hammer to it’s upper surfaces. They would have to replace hoods, deck lids, windshields, back-lights,fenders, and completely paint them because of the hail storm damage. The worst hail storm to hit Denver was in 1990, and I remember it clearly. I looked up the storm, and it is classified as the worst in American history, with adjusted damages exceeding 1.1 billion dollars.

When I lived in Village 7 back in ‘80 I planted two wonderful vegetable gardens. Two years in a row I watched them hammered to a pulp by hailstorms.

I worked for Severe Storm Labs one year in Oklahoma - only saw one tornado. During my time in Colorado Springs I saw four. Also, the heaviest rain I’ve seen in my life was in COS. You could not see thirty feet. I once saw four feet of hail fall in the Austin Bluffs area.

Bad weather hits there.

A friend and I were in this hailstorm that hit Munich on 12Jul84. We were just a few miles outside the city when it hit. It caused some 4 billion dollars in damage. It was so loud we could hardly hear each other though we were both in the from seat of our car. We had to turn in the next day as the front and rear windshields were gone.

I have never experienced anything like this ever.

I’ve only been caught out in a car during a hailstorm once in my life, in a brand new Maxima. I thought for sure the car would be damaged, I closed the sunshade on the glass sunroof because I thought it was going to shatter. The noise was deafening, the windows fogged and with the high wind and constant lightning, I almost bailed out over the guardrail into the culvert for fear of a tornado. After it stopped, the ground was covered with heavy ground fog. But, this was barely 1” diameter if it was that. The car got a few nicks to the paint, no dents, no broken glass. I can’t even imagine being in a car in 3” diameter hail.

I visited a tulip farm in another state where I saw some large cones with the wide end pointed toward the sky. I found out that they were intended to eliminate hail that could damage the tulips. Supposedly, by creating small gas explosions in the cones, they aim shock waves up into the sky that break up hail stones as they form.

I had trouble believing that this actually works, but the farm appeared to have invested a lot of money in this technology and I never got around to looking up whether there is some scientific proof behind it.

I need to get out there and get a car. I don’t care how it looks. Maybe a nice newish Lexus or something along those lines.
