You are right, the claim - “true socialism hasn’t been tried yet! USSR was an aberration!” - from academics over the years, is more prolific today than ever.
However, there are a few more “aberration[s].”
Socialism/Communism has absolutely destroyed, collapsed, or made worse every economy, society, and country which has had it. Mass death, democide, abject poverty, and slavery have been a matter of recorded history in every case.

Not to mention the actual economic destruction which is now a matter of historical record *NOW, *TODAY within the United States itself! So they are already economically and historically illiterate, and plain stupid!
So it really is a lie, that we can do socialism better in the United States, as we have already collapsed our system with socialism we have already implemented!
As well Socialistic economic and social policy has been rooted in nearly every “Western” industrialized nation or continent in Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Australia, and Africa. Each of these have been incorporating socialistic control and policy for much of the past century.
In the continent of Africa, almost every nation has had horrific experiences with Communist governments and dictators. It is truly sobering to study. As with Asia, millions of Africans have been killed due to communist governments supported by Moscow and China.
Even worse, there have been many killed and subjected to communist/totalitarian regimes even supported by the Clintons!
