Donald Trump really, really wants to win California
LA Times ^ | July 20, 2016 | Melanie Mason

"Every time he meets with me, he asks me...'Can I win California?'" said McCarthy, a Republican from Bakersfield, at an event hosted by Politico's Playbook.

McCarthy said he replies: "Well, I don't think so. It's pretty difficult."

That's an understatement. California is one of the deepest blue states in the country. It hasn't backed a Republican for the White House since George H.W. Bush won in 1988.

The Trump team insists they'll play well in Democratic-friendly terrain like Connecticut, Oregon and New Jersey, and that Trump will campaign in blue states.

You haven’t figured out yet that Trump is playing by a different rulebook than what the political machine uses?

DJT understands what many do not: the Deems have NO path to victory without California. None. Zero.

If he can make inroads there, none of the other swing states matter. The Dems will be forced to go all out to keep California blue.

I think Trump is laying a trap for the dems in Kalifornia! Make them spend money in a state they thought to be an automatic get.

I like the brilliance of the strategy!

You are totally correct. Most union members don’t vote the way the leaders tell them to.

You have a few great bundling opportunities...

Prop 58, re institutes the failed bilingual education system that was banned under Prop 227. Banning it won the majority of latino voters.

Prop 67, a nanny state prop that bans single use shopping bags.

Prop 59, encourages the state to waste money fighting Citizens vs United all over again.

Prop 62, repeals the death penalty

Prop 63, bans ‘high capacity’ magazines (IE standard) from handgun & rifles in California, requires background check before someone can purchase ammo.

Prop 65, institutes a new tax on the likely banned carry out bags to give to a private corporation.

Prop 66, makes it even easier for those on death row to appeal anything and everything.

That’s just a brief list - there’s also legalizing marijuana, condoms for porn actors (really?), and more. It is a vast power grab by the liberals in California, and Trump making campaign appearances here on these issues could easily swing it; even better, send Melinda to campaign to keep bilingual education out of the schools and consigned to history where it belongs.

The absolute worst thing that ever happened to Presidential election politics is KARL ROVE and his idiotic model of just concede most of the map, try not to offend anyone and then just try to win a GOTV effort in a handful of states....

To his credit this did win the White House in 2000 and 2004... However, it just BARELY managed it! And that’s a failed model, its not maintainable.. you have to expand your party and you do that by offense. The Republican Party hasn’t played OFFENSE in nearly 3 decades. It has only managed to win the popular vote 1 time in the past nearly 28 years, and even then it was only by 2.5% or so for a sitting wartime president! That’s insane! It’s inexcusable and its because reality is, both parties are little more than puppets to a few money men who make them dance for them.

Trump is the first president in a long time that truly is going to play in places that no Republican has in 30 years... and its not because of anything more than he’s a strong leader, and folks believe him when he says I will put america first... period. That simple.

The “blue” states have been largely blue because of a few reasons, number one is Karl Rove’s model... which just concedes the map... number 2 Republicans haven’t put up a good candidate who can play well to blue collar voters in ages, particularly in the rust belt and north east, and number 3 because honestly, they aren’t willing to take the fight to them.

Trump is a winner, he’s not going to be afraid to fight, and he should be, he should be fighting for every state... how is California ever going to change if no one is even willing to fight for it? How can you expect your party to grow, and get stronger if everyone knows day one no one cares???? Take it to em Donald... I fully expect Trump to take states no one, no one in the punditry is willing to consider, and even if he doesn’t take them outright, he will make inroads that will cause Democrats to spend money places they never thought they would need to, opening opportunities elsewhere.

You shrink the battlefield when you have limited resources or ability to fight.... its long past time we had an honest true 50 state election where NOTHING was just conceded before it began

No surprise. Some of these people are the same ones who’d roll over and hand over large regions of our country over to enemies countries. Not the kind of people I’d want in my foxhole.

a ban on ‘single use shopping bags?”

what do you call a shopping bag that doesn’t even make it through a single use? (Safeway bags are so damned cheapo made.... that they break and spill your milk and muskmelon all over the parking lot before you can even get them to your car)

that’s not single use, that’s half-use maybe?

The states Trump really needs to concentrate on are (in no particular order) New Hampshire, Iowa, Nevada, Florida, Ohio, Colorado, Wisconsin and Virginia.

If Trump risks funds on deep blue states, they will be New York and New Jersey, due to home state pride in the former case and because of Chris Christie as a close adviser in the latter case. If he can find a low cost way to win California, so much the better.

I agree. Too bad there are so many doubting-Thomases here. They don’t realize that Trump is a fighter and fights to win! If he can win CA he will be one tough sunny-beach President.

Trump doesn’t have to spend much to win. He is ahead or tie with Hillary without spending a dime on advertisements. He can win any State

Trump should be very competitive in those states, I don’t know about NJ, but heard he was even in Connecticut

It would also force Hillary to spend money there.

Hillary has all the money she needs. Trump is the one short of money.

If Trump wants to fight for California, then fine. But if he does, he needs to be funding a massive registration effort to get all these new voters that are going to vote for him registered to vote. Time is going away one day at a time.

If a poll puts Trump within 5 pts in Cali, Hillary’s going to spend 25 million there.

Just a trap laid by the Dems for Trump to waste his resources.

That's a defeatist attitude and it belies your screen name which should probably be changed to loser3000.

You want to just write off 55 electoral votes without even a fight? Over 20% of the 270 needed to win? That is an utter disgrace.

Wouldn't want you in my foxhole. You'd toss your gun aside and surrender.

I live here. It’s not the mass media. It’s the demographics. He should not waste a dime on this side of the Sierras. His proposal of the wall and his use of the term “rapists” for Mexicans pretty much add up to what the 47% video was for Romney.
