When I was employed at a big company long ago, they had an “office of the president,” in recognition of the fact that the CEO’s job is too big for most individuals. At the same time, the CEO must be outward-facing, marketing the company to the world, its investors, and the media, and he must be inward-facing, actually directing the operations of the company. In a big company, each of these roles is a full-time job requires different personalities and capabilities, so it makes sense to divide up the top job, as long as the top two can work together.
