ITHACA, N.Y. -- This weekend Ithaca Police will have extra officers patrolling the streets on the lookout for unsafe and intolerable activity - in particular, violations committed by pedestrians.
Police say extra officers will be on patrol from July 22 to July 25 during various hours of the day and night. A release by police advises that "officers will utilize a zero tolerance approach for all violations observed."
The department says the goal is to increase pedestrian safety on Ithaca's streets, sidewalks and crosswalks.

The communists of Ithaca are getting what they deserve. But I’m sure they’ll never realize it.
No, instead they support the effort of Obama and Hillary to turn the entire country into Ithaca.
Won’t this damage the police’s relationship with the jaywalking community? They will be limited to jaywalking in the shadows.

Good. Jaywalkers are jerks. Minneapolis is full of jaywalkers, all have a chip on their shoulder. They’ll just start walk slowly across a busy street with a scowl on their faces as if daring you to say something.
Thank goodness there are no major crimes in Ithaca that need attention.
If they jay-walk while chewing gum, is it a ticketable offense?

I got a ticket in San Diego once for jaywalking. Didn’t even know what it was. In nowhere Alabama we didn’t have many crosswalks.
Yeah, it isn't like it's the robbery capital of the area or anything. ;-)
I wonder if this will apply the next time BLM stands in the middle of the street, stopping traffic for hours, in Ithaca.
In all seriousness, I could see this backfiring on the city. The BLM and SJW crowd can compare this to “stop and frisk” and other “Broken windows” police tactics that unfairly target minority citizens.
In California they can ticket you if you cross between 2 intersections with a traffic control device. It is the same as a moving violation ie: a point on your license. Big jump in insurance rates. Your lucky you probably had no Cali DL.
The police try to ticket and use a stop sign as a traffic control device. Doesn't hold up in court has to be a traffic light. THE OPD (Oakland) love to nab commuters who come into the city as their downtown intersections are almost all traffic lights
To be fair, there have been a number of pedestrians KILLED recently by automobiles.
While not the highest crime priority, drawing attention to the safe and legal way to cross the streets, can’t hurt. I’m sure it will be a temporary use of extra officers.
I understand that it is a little like gun laws, in that criminals might stop committing murder because they will get punished for a gun law.
Pedestrians will obey crossing laws for fear of getting a ticket, yet they are not afraid of being killed by breaking them.
Hey, it is what liberals do.
For drivers, remember, if you hit a jaywalker in a “bicycle lane”, you will get life in prison without possibility of parole. /s
You will be allowed temporary medical release to participate in the “Safe Shooting Gallery” program where you can get free needles and a “safe” environment to shoot up your drugs. If you cannot afford your drugs, they will be provided for you. /s
I can picture a white dude running from some BLM dudes out to smack him around and get stopped and ticketed for jaywalking then being turned loose into the BLM's hands for the much deserved beating...
But what if you moonwalk across the street?
