Trump Campaign Guts GOP’s anti-Russia Stance on Ukraine
Washington Post ^ | 7/18/16 | Josh Rogin

Posted on 07/18/2016 12:34:40 PM PDT by cassiusking

The Trump campaign worked behind the scenes last week to make sure the new Republican platform won’t call for giving weapons to Ukraine to fight Russian and rebel forces, contradicting the view of almost all Republican foreign policy leaders in Washington.

And believe it or not, I think the reason it was instigated is that Obama was deeply offended about Putin’s anti-homosexuality rules. All of this began when Putin stopped letting Russian children be adopted by American couples because we wouldn’t refuse them to homosexuals. This is when Obama was deeply offended and started using NGOs to start a 5th column in Russia to overthrow their government.

It’s been downhill ever since.

And precisely, you nailed it. State thought Russia would accept Sevastopol as a nato base. It’s crazy, but that’s what these nuts were going for. Nato up to their border, and Crimea as a nato outpost.

Islamic fundamentalism is probably a bigger existential threat than the Nazis ever were.

Right. Like I said before, you let me know when they murder 11 million through institutional practices and another 40 million in warfare. To equate the scale of murder by Nazi Germany to Islamic terrorists, at this time, is ignorant. In WWII, tens of millions died shooting down their fighters, blowing up their tanks and killing their infantry. You make it sound easy. Thirty million dead claim otherwise. Islam is the greatest threat we face today, no doubt. Allowing Putin to reestablish the Soviet Union, just because he happens to show some courage in fighting the Islamic threat, will make the world even more dangerous.

“So Trump is going to continue the legacy of Hillary and Obama with the Reset Strategy of giving Putin “another chance”?”

Yep, Trump isn’t bothered by the fact that Putin is trying to protect Russian CHILDREN from gay recruiting. But I guess some people here are.

“This is unbelievable especially give Russia’s work to invade Europe (again)”

When did that happen. The last thing I heard was that Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary had ZERO Russian troops occupying their countries.

“...to flood Europe with refugees”

I guess you never heard of ANGELA MERKEL, or the fact that she was ELECTED by the GERMAN PEOPLE, and only the GERMAN PEOPLE. Trust me, Putin doesn’t need help destroying Europe, they are PERFECTLY CAPABLE of doing it on their own.

“to support ISIS”

Seems to me that the ISIS terrorists in Syria, at least, are getting their butts kicked. Perhaps you have him mixed up with McCain, who is openly supporting this bunch.

“and to break up NATO with the Turkey gambit.”

NATO is doing JUST FINE making asses of themselves, starting with the attacks on Serbs. Putin doesn’t need to lift a finger.

>You’re a fool. Putin is a career apparatchik in the Soviet Communist Party and was an influential member of the the KGB. Putin led the efforts of the Communist Party to suppress religious freedom and engaged in the torture and murder of religious leaders. The KGB under Putin destroyed churches and murdered an untold number of Christians. But now he’s seen the light, right? You’re a fool because you’re fooled by his actions, but Putin has never changed. The Russian Orthodox Church has been a puppet of the state since Stalin. Only fools believe the softer side of Putin and that he has suddenly become a champion of religious freedom and Christianity.

Didn’t Saul who became Paul do the same?

George Bush looked into Putin's soul and liked what he saw. You appear to support Bush's view. Bush, by the way, was a neocon.

Putin annexing Ukraine, and then the Baltics, won't prevent the spread of Islamofascism. But it will make Putin, the Christian, a more powerful dictator. Communists love dictators. Christians, not so much.

No, the kgb under putin didn’t destroy churches and murder Christians.

The KGB, when Putin was an officer, was actively involved in the persecution of Christian churches and organizations that were not aligned with the KGB controlled Russian Orthodox Church. That continues today and Putin uses the Orthodox church to consolidate his power. If you try and set up a church in Russia that is not approved by the state - and the only church approved by the state is Russian Orthodox - then Putin, the Christian poser, will throw your ignorant ass in jail.

Churches were rebuilt by Stalin during WWII because he needed their support to defeat the Nazis. That alliance lasted until the war was over. The war on Christianity continued with even greater retribution under Khrushchev, Brezhnev, Chernenko, and Andropov. The Russian Orthodox church has been excluded of course, because they serve as an arm of the KGB. It's no wonder 9 out of 10 Russians identify as Orthodox. Totalitarians tend to foster that kind of obedience.

You clearly want to believe that Putin is a good guy whose appearance leads those not paying attention into believing that he's transformed from his KGB pedigree to a man of God and Christian values. It's a great deception that many have fallen for, you included. Of course, like all those who only see what they want to see, you've become nothing more than a modern day useful idiot. And Lenin, Stalin and Putin, etc. all love their useful idiots.

The Republicans have approved weapon sales to Ukraine but Obama has stopped it, just like the Trump people at the convention. https://www.rt.com/news/243417-us-house-weapons-ukraine/

Russia has invaded Ukraine which is Europe and another aspect of their hybrid warfare is the flooding of the Europe with refugees fleeing the Russian bombs in Syria. There are 1.5 million refugees fleeing Russian bombs in Ukraine.

"Trump Campaign Guts GOP’s anti-Russia Stance on Ukraine"

Has he ruled out all military assistance to Ukraine? I didn't see that.

I am not really a newbie. I resigned after a hiatus for a number of years. I started reading National Review in 1967. I voted for Reagan in 1972 and joined FR in the mid 90’s.

Trump is betting that we can co-exist and that Putin feels threatened by NATO being so close. He might even be betting that we could have a better relationship on some issues than Europe.

Whether he is right or not.....I don’t really see Putin thinking he can take over the US, though the Russians likely few the US as on at a breaking point to be balkanized.

However, that will only happen if a certain thing occurs in the US...which won’t happen under Trump, but might under HRC

Let's do nothing then. That will surely temper his enthusiasm to expand his sphere of influence. Putie's dream stops at Ukraine, right? I'm sure when his tanks roll up to the border of the Baltic states you'll still be arguing for letting Putin be Putin and avoiding making new enemies. What could possibly go wrong?

Doing something which has zero chance of changing anything is a problem, not a solution. At the end of the day, even if armies lined up in the Ukraine to push out the Russian influences, they'd have to stay there forever UNTIL Ukraine finds a way to live with their former masters.

Sending arms there to play the proxy war just means that we'll be arming some splinter group who will likely hate us for just sending arms and telling them to protect their country.

Only a moron would suggest that we should play the game of letting Putin be Putin. That said, only an idiot would think that there's any solution available that doesn't include Ukraine and Russia working together over the long term. Both of them are tied together economically and socially. Build a wall between them and Russia and it will be Ukraine which starves.

Meanwhile, you want to put in gas pipelines, build infrastructure for trade, work with the rest of Eastern Europe to keep Ukraine and other countries from being more than puppet states - well, that's where dollars would be better spent rather than appeasing arms brokers who want government dollars to get rid of old inventory.

70+% of Russians are now Christians compared to around 30% when Putin took over. If God can forgive and use a murderous tool like Paul, why can’t he do the same with Putin?

Ukraine needs man portable anti tank missiles. Pakistan was willing to sell their TOW missiles to Ukraine, but that would have required the US approval. General Breedlove pushed for the White House to give it and that is why he was sacked.

So, what, a hundred anti-tank missiles will make them safe? A thousand? Ten thousand? Is that all that is missing from peace in Ukraine?

Ukraine needs energy and economic independence from Russia. They need business development dollars and a method to move forward. A low degree war with Russia's proxy fighters going against the US proxy fighters won't bring any of that.

I didn’t say that Putin is our friend. That is not his job. Indeed, it is incompatible with his office.

What I said was that your comment that Putin is a communist was “Islam is a religion of peace” level of neocon stupid, which it is.

Of course there is no single silver bullet that will make everything alright. I believe anti-tank missiles are part of a solution and something they can’t make themselves. Pakistan was willing to sell them 500 launchers and 8000 missiles had the White House given the approval.
