How Richard Speck's Rampage 50 Years Ago Changed a Nation
NBC News ^ | 7/14/2016 | CORKY SIEMASZKO

Fifty years ago a stranger with a pockmarked face and a "Born To Raise Hell" tattoo on his left arm barged into a Chicago townhouse where a group of student nurses were living and proceeded to lead them "like lambs to the slaughter."

The intruder's name was Richard Speck and for five hours he systematically tortured and murdered eight women, raping at least one of them.

***

The crime horrified Chicago and the rest of the country because it was so unfathomable — a massacre for no apparent reason by a remorseless stranger against a group of young women he didn't know.

And it introduced a term to the American public that has since then become all too familiar: random mass murder.

This subhuman fiend lived out his life as a “woman” with breast implants who enjoyed all the sex he could get in prison. Look it up. It will make your blood boil.

Some people should have went to jail for allowing that too.

Also on the Simon & Garfunkel Christmas song "Silent Night 6 O'Clock News", the narrator voiceover speaks of the Speck crimes and how he is being indicted for nine murders. Just some trivia for the trivia buffs out there.

I remember the video about Speck growing breasts and allowing himself to be used as a female in prison. He seemed to enjoy it. What a depraved place prison can be. He should have been executed for those murders.

I only read about this a few years ago. Looks like murderous psychos have been active in the US for quite a while. Same with the 1927 Michigan school bombing.

I never heard of that song. I don’t know if I want to look it up.

Sadly , it seems as though what were once prison perversions are now mainstream lifestyle choices.

It’s from the 1960s. I like the Simon & Garfunkel version of that song. I collect Christmas music and have thousands of tracks dating back to the early days of recordings. I am seriously into Christmas music and during November and December, that’s all I listen to.

***And apparently I freaked out as a little girl when my babysitter let us watch Psycho.***

I remember when it was to be shown on TV for the first time! We gathered around to watch, then they pulled it and put something else on. Bummer.I had already seen it several years before at the theater.

If the young women had guns, things could have ended differently.

There are now several websites devoted to serial killers, who they are and what they did.

A book which gives a different and interesting perspective on both the Son of Sam killer (David Berkowitz) and Charley Manson is Ultimate Evil : The Truth about the Cult Murders: Son of Sam and Beyond. The author, Maury Terry, alleges their acts went beyond the publically accepted version and had connections with Satanic cultism. When I read it, it gave me chills, though some readers poo-poo the whole idea. Still an interesting read.

Speck’s death penalty was overturned by the Burger-led US Supreme Court in June 1971 while still upholding his conviction. Since it did not overturn, I don’t think that it was listed as a decision but it was apparently William O Douglas, William Brennan, Potter Stewart, Byron White and Thurgood Marshall deciding versus Hugo Black, John Harlan, Harry Blackmun and Warren Burger.

In November of 1972, the US Supreme Court, with William Rehnquist replacing John Harlan, ruled in Furman v Georgia, that the death penalty was unconstitutional and thus every state death penalty had to be converted to prison terms. In this case, it was William O Douglas, William Brennan, Potter Stewart, Byron White and Thurgood Marshall deciding.

Speck was in jail from July 1966 to his conviction in 1968 and on the Illinois Death Row to 1971, then under sentence of 400-1200 years until he died, 25 years after his victims, in December of 1991. In 1978, 6 years AFTER the Supreme Court overturned his death penalty, he freely confessed to Chicago reporter Bob Greene, that he did the killing but remembers only parts. He also said that he enjoyed getting high on drugs in prison and a post-death video came to light showing him doing cocaine, having sex and boasting how much he enjoyed his prison time.

I only go into this detail to remind ALL OF US how members of the US Supreme Court can have a strong effect. The next President has a guarantee of one and probable 2 more appointments to this body, given that Ruth Ginsburg and Anthony Kennedy are both at or over 80. Obama already got 2 with Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.

. A videotape surfaced showing Speck, who was undergoing transgender mutilation, partying in his cell.

I saw a tape like that in 1994, Speck was showing off drugs, money and his buttboy.

At least Gacy got what he deserved.

I was just East of Memphis when they captured Speck there. I got sent home to Texas just South of Austin just in time to watch Whitman on live TV shooting from the Tower. Music was good that Summer but events in the US were pretty scary.
