I was impressed with him when I heard his speech, at Hillsdale college in 2010, on the Constitution and the presidency. I pictured George Washington. Very dignified, very soft-spoken, yet very strong.

I agree with you insofar as picking a younger running mate would set up a potential successor down the line.

I could accept Newt (as if I have a choice), but I don’t think he’d be a good pick for a number of reasons.

I don’t have any use for Mike Pence because he endorsed Ted Cruz. That means he’s either an idiot or playing politics.

Here is an age chart worth considering:

Reagan in 1980 69
Bush 41 in 1980 56

Bush 43 in 2000 54
Cheney in 2000 59

Trump 70
Gingrich 73
Pence 57

As for Cruz, I started out supporting Cruz and switched to Trump. Does that make me an idiot or playing politics?

Trump went from almost no support to winning the nomination. Should he have done that without people switching over to him from other candidates?

Is everyone who switched from someone else to Trump an idiot or playing politics?

There might be an idiot here, but I’m not so sure it’s the people who switched from other candidates to Trump.

I did not realize he had endorsed Ted Cruz. I thought Pence was too liberal and establishment for that. Regardless of the merits of Ted Cruz, that took some cojones. You may convince me he’s not so bad after all!

"The Al Qaeda News Media says Trump can’t be trusted to make PRESIDENTIAL decisions. Choosing Pence proves them wrong."

Tangent to the news media is Congress and the Senate and who do you want on your ticket as an insurance policy? I.E. No more 41's even Nancy didn't want "The Elder". I don't see Pence succumbing to Washingtionian's disease, i.e. getting more liberal the more he is in office or cutting deals with ne'er–do–wells. On that last point, he might be the guy...

The media in 2016 is hardly the media in 1860.

I like Pence and at one time thought he would make a decent VP for TRump.
But now, I do not see how he helps Trump beat Hillary. He is not the attack dog needed to over come Hillary, the Democrats, the GOPe and the media. Plus I see Pence as a loyal water carrier for the party. Like most of the GOPe, party first then country.
My guess is, Pence is on the short list to replace Trump as the nominee or to insure the GOPe self serving prophecies of gloom & doom if Trump is the nominee.

Pence has far more political experience than Dan Quayle ever had or to this day possesses. I knew someone who attended a private meeting with Quayle in 1990 when he was GHW Bush’s VP. His comment afterward was that Quayle came across like a frat boy, not a leader. Bush did the man (or himself in the end) no favors in selecting Quayle at that age and stage in his political career. Pence would be a serious choice and would complement Trump very well.

“As for Cruz, I started out supporting Cruz and switched to Trump. Does that make me an idiot or playing politics?”

Pence endorsed Cruz shortly before the important Indiana primary. By this time, Cruz had more than exposed himself as a liar and charlatan - thumping the Bible as he planned his next dirty trick. If Pence didn’t see Cruz for what he was by that time, he’s not very perceptive. If he DID see and endorsed Cruz for political reasons I don’t have much respect for him, either.

I’m certainly not calling people idiots who started out supporting Cruz and switched over to Trump - it took a while for the guy’s true (lack of) character to show through. In the beginning, I cheered Cruz and thought he would make a great running mate. That, of course, changed as time went on.

NO. Weak-kneed. We need a real leader, not a guy who runs and hides in terror from the Gaystapo.

“...he will eat away at Hillary’s women vote. The guy is handsome, and very manly!”

God help us if “handsome” and “manly” are reasons for people to vote for a candidate. I look forward to the day when women cast votes using their brains instead of their feelings. Handsome and manly don’t hurt, but aren’t priorities. Of course, you are referring to Hillary’s voters, and most don’t have brains anyhow. Things that make you go “Hmmmm... .”

Used to listen to him on the radio. Glad you mentioned it because if isn’t always mentioned in the articles about him. Good common sense with a quick wit IIRC

If the events of the last three weeks haven’t convinced the Rubios and the Bushes that our only hope is Trump, picking Pence isn’t going to make a dent.

No decision has to be made soon so he can step out of governor race.

If he wants to. If Pence has his own eye on the presidency then he may want to wait. Two terms as Indiana governor would line him up for a shot at the White House in 2020 if Hillary wins, or 2024 if Trump wins.
